FWI've been told, the Wed Haymarket ride is switching the A ride to cross this week.

Confirm with the shop 'cause I've heard about it secondhand.

I've been trying somewhat unsuccessfully to get rid of the hop on my remount. Walking speed? I'm OK. Anything faster and my brain over rides my body.

Practice, practice and practice some more! You're on the right track, but just break it down at walking pace, and visualize that while at speed.

Step, step, step, last step swing your leg back over the saddle.

My first two CX seasons, my club did dirt road rides. Those were fun.

However, they didn't build the skills. As in, technique for dismounts, technique for remounts, technique for carrying your bike, stuff like that. One local shop is holding a weekly CX clinic that I've been going to, and clearly I need to learn a fair bit. For instance, I tend to do the double hop while remounting. That's wasted time and energy. Oh, and it's now been 7 years since I swung a leg over a CX bike, so I'm very rusty.

I'm thinking of getting a cross bike...

Goal for next season: D2R2, 180Km, ride EVERYTHING.

Just put a triple crank on your road bike, and you'll be fine.

I'd buy that.

Jobst Brandt wrote that most pinch flats can be avoided with latex tubes, and it seems true in my experience (with latex, bottoming out does not mean a pinch flat). When you can run 300 tpi clinchers at 30 psi or less, why bother with tubulars?

Met up at the shop and lo and behold! I WAS told right. Last nite was the first cross ride of the season. There were 3 of us. Shop owner/Cat 1 (SO), S the Cat 3 that won one of the 3/4 races last year, and me. On the way over, my legs were starting to load with lactic acid. :confused Well THIS ain't good considering what's coming!

So we hopped into the woods for the first bit of the cross stuff. Hmmm this ain't too bad. A little rooty and rocky for cross tires... When 'I gotta stop!' First flat of the nite. S hit a root or a rock just wrong and pinch flatted his tire.

Up and down. Up and down. Then a killer downhill! SO hops down the hill, S goes down the hill dragging his rear wheel. I start down the hill. Miss that rock. Whew! Miss that root! Thank doG Then the evil one got me. :eek1 I wasn't quite far enough back behind my saddle and sure nuff! Over the bars I went.

Didya know the ground's still hard all these years later?!

I knew I hit hard when I sat up and made sure my helmet wasn't cracked. Tweaked my derailleur hanger a little. Otherwise? Not too much wrong. Took me a little bit to get back to where they were waiting for me and THEN the 'real' ride started.

Grass course for most of it. Wind behind the baseball fields, up and around these trees, etc etc etc Started out with a 1-lap race for 'seeding' purposes. I lost so I got a 30sec head start for the 2-lap race that was coming.

It took SO 1.5 laps to ride me down. Racing thru grass is LOTS harder than it sounds. :nod When he got me, I basically said 'eff it.' and stopped for a bit to recover. S rode by and shouted 'stay on it man!' as he blasted by. I guess I better finish the last 1/3 of the lap, huh?

Second 2-lap race SO got me at the second time over the barriers but no one else got past me. :clap I hung within 100' of SO till the end. Damn near ran off the 2-track trail thru the woods as I was trying to keep SO in sight.

All in all, despite crashing and having crappy legs, I had a good time. Oh, that reminds me... So there's these folks practicing softball next to the barriers. As SO passed me in the first race I caught the look from one of the softball players. 'That doesn't look like fun...' My answer was 'it IS in a masochistic kind of way.'

...and that's cross for ya. Hardest thing I've done on two wheels but the most fun at the same time.

Speaking of tubular vs clinchers: 3 clincher pinch flats last nite. 0 tubular flats. I was running 30/32 (Grifo/FMB SSC) but could have gone a smidge lower for the grass section.

I can just see you with a 64/54/44 crank.

With latex tubes or butyl?

We ran about that psi in latex on rocky rooted mtb trails over the weekend without a flat. I hope to do the same tonight.

From what I saw: rubber tubes.

I think they managed to hit rocks, etc 'just wrong.'

Latex tubes are much less likely to pinch flat than butyl tubes. Just last night I had my first in years, and then it was only because of a 2 foot drop onto a rock I hadn't noticed. I was riding some tough mtb trails with just 30 psi, and the pinch flat was so small I rode 15 minutes back to the car with a bit of pressure to spare.

On most 'cross courses running low 20s psi is easy with latex and wide rims. And my main problem running less has been with the tires folding in turns.

FYI- I train on Clincher w/ latex but I race on Tubulars. Don't kid yourself, a quality Tubular (FMB, Dugast, etc) are a ton better. Tires are the most important part of racing CX ahead of build kits and frames. This year I will be supporting 7 CX wheelsets and ready for any condition for the "A" & "B" bikes.

How so? I honestly couldn't tell much difference. Maybe the wide rims matter more than I would've guessed, but with a light, supple tire and latex tubes my clinchers roll nicely.
Meanwhile even my relatively pricey clincher tires are cheap next to tubulars. And a couple three wheelsets are plenty, as switching tires is a 5 minute job.
