I pay for strava, mainly for the breadcrumb feature that allows my wife and the kids to see where I am anytime. I know I could run 2 separate apps to do the same thing but $79/yr isn't worth the hassle. Everything down loads from my Hammerhead at the end at the ride and no fiddling about

Intervals.icu have already made changes so that any Strava imported rides can't be viewed by a coach (or third party).

Which means anyone with a Wahoo isn't able to use Intervals.icu with a coach.

I get what you're saying, but this feels real.

I missed the email or maybe didn’t get it. I don’t notice any impact but I have one follower and only use it to compete with myself and create snap to routes using the heatmap. I’ve discovered many excellent routes with almost no effort using that feature.

I finally watched the video, and apparently this breaks trainerroad and zwift until January. So that's annoying.

These changes apparently are centered around stopping leaks of private data. Although they also want to corner the market on AI analysis. What they have now is a joke though.

I have always made fun of Ride With GPS for wanting to be strava, but they may finally get their wish. Only problem is that I doubt they can replicate leaderboards and segments. Hopefully they don't take on investors they can't placate, like strava did.

I'm a paid member and don't think I got a email, I use garmin for outdoor rides but I am bit concerned if Zwift and Strava won't play nice and I use Zwift indoors a fair amount.

If you and your family members have Apple iPhones you can share your location with them for free.

I’ve been a Strava user for over 10 years. I appreciate the ability to create and compare segments. It’s encouraging to see that I’m nearly as fast as I was in my early forties. I recently bought an Amazfit Chinese spy smartwatch that tracks my rides and syncs data to Strava. Hopefully that doesn’t get broken by whatever the latest changes are. I appreciate the simplicity of pushing 2 buttons on my watch to start and stop recording my rides.

I'm not sure there's any issues with Zwift uploading to Strava, only if there is a 3rd app that is linked to Strava and pulls data from Strava to populate their stuff (you do a ride, Zwift uploads to Strava, 3rd party app then pulls that ride data from Zwift).. I think there is some racing stuff that isn't officially Zwift, but Zwift-affiliated that does this maybe? At least that's how I understand it..

also, I'm a subscriber and either didn't get an email or did and totally ignored it.. could be either to be honest..

I don't. I take the money I save and apply it to my Flobikes subscription, which is now absolutely useless here in the US.

Indeed. Strava will happily take data from any and all! I had imagined if Zwift or other app used rider data to create virtual environments- for example simulated riders - for example race against several simulated versions of yourself or other riders created from past Strava data with some random noise thrown in- that is prohibited. I dont know how zwift works but it seems to me if you are riding with other riders virtually in real time you dont need Strava to do that. I would think the results of such a ride could be done within zwift too. On the other hand if they are getting those aggregated results via Strava from the individual rider uploads that would be prohibited.

I don’t and won’t pay for Strava. I just use it to track my mileage and can go back to what I used to do and create a spreadsheet in Numbers if they insist upon a paid subscription. Also Strava uploads my data from Garmin Connect not the other way around.

When I was a runner I would use the free training logs that Runner’s World provided with a subscription.

I do pay for Strava and use it to track my fitness activities and I enjoy the mapping functionality. I don’t think these changes will change my experience with Strava.

I don't think that's true. You can sync wahoo directly with intervals.icu. that's what I do. If you sync your wahoo to strava first and then it syncs with intervals AND you share it with a coach then that will not be allowed.

Their AI feature is somewhat lame but expected. Everyone who works in software is trying to find an excuse to do a project with an LLM. I haven’t but I’m like one of the last people at my job to get to it. And only because I’m perhaps on the practical side and am still just trying to nail down the right idea. We get to do our own innovation projects a couple times a year and I tend to not do them unless I’m highly sure my project is going to get selected to be productized.

The thing with training recommendations is the data to train the AI. Say that 5x fast. There are two things you need:

- Tons of ride data on tons of riders
- Correct real world feedback for those riders from good coaches at different points in there stream of ride data

Lots of these sites have the ride data. The feedback from real coaches is the problem. Does Strava even have coaching? You’d think some place like Training Peaks might have an edge, but I don’t think they do. When I have worked with a coach they had me use Training Peaks, but they sent me feedback via email or phone, which meant TP got zero feedback data they could later mine.

I think the funny thing with the Strava AI summaries is they seem hopelessly optimistic and sunny. It will tell me I’m crushing it when correct feedback is that I’m cooked and need rest.

Sometimes you dont need a shotgun to kill a flea. For some riders who have a few years worth of data - ride and race data, biometric and health data, coaching feedback in the form of simple metrics, even diet and sleep- it would be hard to beat conventional modeling approaches. By conventional I would include a lot of "traditional" machine learning approaches, many of which have been around for decades (or even hundreds of years in one case). I agree that for full blown AI to work would require a huge amount of rider data, ideally including personal data, I would think. Maybe some public data can be a proxy for some of the private data but thats going to be a challenge. But I think we are a long way from being able to have a chat gpt type back and forth on a Sunday to decide what your training regime for the week will be.
