Personally, I don't mind the look. But I also "grew up" during the era of Ritchey stems on the RB-1, so the UI-12 looks like a thowback to that. To me. |

If quill is still an option, these came up when I looked up 31.8 quill stem:

Great thread for me as I ride a lot of old bike! Thanks for the good ideas.

innicycle.
It was designed and is sold by a bikeforums member, it is very well made, and it is simple to set up and use. The spacers all have a small rubber ring on the inside to help ensure they stay in place since there is no downward pressure in place like on a threadless headset. The fit and finish really are great. And it can be easily cut down in height since there is so much to begin with(see below). |

Profile Design adaptor with flipped stem to get my fit correct. Been using this since 2015 with no problems or adjustments; also travels well. Space between top cap and bottom of stem is about the same as on my threadless bikes.
Personally, think this looks correct, unlike some other options using a bunch of spacers underneath the stem. Helps that I used Cannondale C3 bits (stem, bars, seatpost) on an 88 ST so it looks almost factory. |

Thanks for all the great suggestions and discussion y'all! Lots of great options to consider. I had considered innicycle in the past but shyed away from the price in favor of a quill adapter, but I'm seeing that the big difference is that the innicycle cleans up the threaded headset and removes the lock nut. I think the main thing bothering me about the quill adapter was how proportionally off it looks to stack a threadless stem atop the threaded headset and locknut assembly. This might be alleviated with a very slim cr-mo 1" stem, but it seems much more limiting.

Nice! The bike he built for his dad is the same deal and was actually what I was imagining as a possible route - I'm just not sure I can get past how disrupting a stem with that much rise is to the lines of the bike... (even though I agree with what Tom said about them making way more sense than the classic but outdated '7' shaped quills).

I went down a rabbit hole looking for a quill stem with a 31.8mm clamp recently, with mixed results. Ended up buying one from someone on this forum

Innicycle. I have it on my 1995 Bianchi. It greatly stiffens the front end of the bike, and it's a very clean look with minimal weight added. I have used quill adaptors for a threadless stem, and tho useful, adds significant clunk to the front end.
