At a rest stop at Mallows Bay on the Potomac, on a ride in Nanjemoy MD today. Beneath the waters of Mallows Bay lies a fleet of sunken ships including historic vessels dating back to the Revolutionary War and remains of the largest ‘Ghost Fleet’ of the World War I steamships. There are 185 archeologically-documented shipwrecks. The ships extend 14 square miles making it the largest ship graveyard in the Western Hemisphere. The “ghost fleet” was part of a shipbuilding program ordered by President Woodrow Wilson to assist United States’ European allies during World War I. The ships were never used and were eventually sold, scrapped for re-usable materials, burned, and sunk.

Rode by the store that serves as the usual mid-way turnaround point in my ride, saw its front end all boarded up plus the two steel barriers knocked off the ground, wonder what happened. Went in and talked to the store owners and found out that a week ago a driver had fallen asleep on the wheels and came crashing right through the store.

Some really striking weather today in the San Gabriel mountains. Not pictured: bald eagle in its nest. First photo taken by a ride partner of me and another partner descending.
