While that might cover any major unforeseens, that doesn't seem like a particularly risky proposition for VW, nor very robust coverage for the purchaser.

We once bought a new 94 Passat 5spd, with a 10 year/100k warranty. We were still making use of that warranty 9 years and 9 months in due to driving less than the average bear.

My last car in Germany before moving to the US was a 325i Touring (wagon).
Loved every kilometer in it.
Despite compromised practicality, i.e. the silly limited trunk access, it served me well including several MTB trips to Italy.
Perfect fun car for 2 people.

i think a e30 wagon is my grail car. i grew up in the back of a 85? peugeot 505 wagon.

no ac, black vinyl interior, usually just sat on the abrasive astroturf like carpet with the rear seats folded down.

Many new vehicles tell you when to change the oil depending on use. We have two of those...A 2012 Ford Edge and 2012 Honda CRV. Oil change interval can be anywhere from roughly 3500 miles to 10,000 miles. Makes sense to me.

I listen to my mechanic and change oil at 10,000 per the manual (synthetic). I drive a lot, about 30,000 in my car. Have had two recent cars that I traded in at 140,000 with no engine problems. My current car is three years old with 105,000 with no engine problems. My wife drives about 5,000 per year, so we change oil at about 6 months because it gets dirty.

The warranty on the 'new' 2015 2.0 TDIs that went back on sale last year is 11 years or 162,000 miles for anything engine & emission related. I'm not positive, but I think it's the same for the certified fixed cars that are getting resold.

Edit:

Here is the actual wording from the settlement paperwork. So the warranty is at least 162,000 and 11 years, but could be longer if you have lots of miles before the fixes were done. Oh, and it includes the turbo and related components!

Extended Emissions Warranty Coverage
For the following Volkswagen 2.0 L TDI engine vehicles repaired by the emissions modification recall, a warranty extension is applicable as defined below.
 2015 MY Beetle with engine code CVCA
 2015 MY Beetle Convertible with engine code CVCA
 2015 MY Golf with engine code CRUA
 2015 MY Golf SportWagen with engine code CRUA
 2015 MY Jetta with engine code CVCA
 2015 MY Passat with engine code CVCA
Warranty Period
The warranty period for the “Extended Emissions Warranty” limited warranty extension shall be the greater of:
 11 years or 162,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s original in-service date; OR
 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date and mileage of Phase 1 of the emissions modification. At the time of the subsequent Phase 2 modification, the extended warranty will be honored for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date and mileage of the completion of Phase 2.
The vehicle’s original in-service date is defined as the date the vehicle was delivered to either the original purchaser or the original lessee; or if the vehicle was first placed in service as a “demonstrator” or “company” car, on the date such vehicle was first placed in service.

Parts Covered Under Extended Warranty
The emissions system warranty shall cover the following parts or systems:
 The entire exhaust after treatment system, including the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst, the Diesel Particulate Filter, the Selective Catalytic Reduction converter, the dosing injector and other Diesel Exhaust Fluid system components, the exhaust flap, and all sensors and actuators
 The entire fuel system, including fuel pumps, high pressure fuel rail, fuel injectors, vibration damper, pressure control valve and all sensors and actuators
 The EGR system, including EGR valves, EGR cooler, EGR filter, EGR temperature sensor, all related hoses and pipes, and all sensors and actuators
 The turbocharger, including the turbocharger damper
 The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system, including SCR DEF quality sensor, and any malfunctions detected by the OBD systems other than those related to the transmission.
Additionally, the engine long block warranty shall cover the engine
sub-assembly that consists of the assembled block, crankshaft, cylinder head, camshaft, and valve train
.
The extended emissions warranty includes parts, labor, and applicable taxes. The extended emissions warranty shall not void or supersede any existing warranty. Conflicts concerning the warranty are to be resolved in favor of the consumer.
More information about your extended emissions warranty coverage is available at www.vwdiesellookup.com and in the customer letter we sent to you in January 2017.

I'm looking at 2011 2012 ish TDi SportWagens 2.0L I think

Seems these are somewhat plentiful in Chicagoland right now. $9500.00 - $1200.00 which is my price range. I like a wagon but not really a car guy and not made of money.

Do people commonly ditch cars at 70,000 miles?

Also seems pricing is fairly consistent but mileage all over from 8000 - 45000 with only a $2000 difference in price?

What should I keep an eye out for when looking and what major costs might I see down the road? Certain years better than other? I plan to drive this car a long time. Manual vs Automatic not a big issue for me...

Riding buddy of mine has a 'an about that vintage' AMG wagon. Definitely a lustworthy wagon. Makes a glorious noise

...so do his 911, and his R32, and his 944S, and...

The guy likes nice cars. His future son-in-law likes em too. Bought an M3 and a 911 recently. His daughter is still driving a Mark 2 Golf GTI that has a VR6 stuffed in it that I'd love to have

The mark 2 GTI is my favorite GTI, had one that was all recaro and round lights...boy, did it break my heart. That 16v engine was a devil. VR6 was a better motor but it was heavy in that chassis. Don't ask about my 88 scirocco...that also broke my heart. I should have learned
