As you state, "The Gun" is very interesting. The numbers are astounding. And, what the AK has helped produce in Africa is very sad.

Sea of Glory: ...European exploring expeditions in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries had visited. Without reliable charts, American sailors were forced to sail blind into some of the most dangerous waters in the world. Finally, in 1838, the United States government launched its first exploring and surveying expedition to the Pacific. But the voyage that was intended to tame the dangers of the largest ocean in the world soon found itself at the mercy of a tempestuous commander—a man so driven by torments and doubts that some literary critics have claimed he was the model for Captain Ahab in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. This, I decided, would be the subject of my next book. The U.S. Exploring Expedition, or "Ex. Ex." for short, was one of the most ambitious undertakings of its time: six sailing vessels and 346 men, including a team of nine scientists and artists, all under the command of the young, brash Lieutenant Charles Wilkes.... http://us.penguingroup.com/static/pa...ry-story5.html |

I'm half way through a biography of Meyer Lansky called Little Man. It's extremely interesting because it deflates a lot of mob myths and a lot of sensationalism about the mafia that is taken for granted, but that never made sense to me. It's currently getting into his period as a hotel/casino maverick in Cuba and I'm finding his relationship with Batista to be quite interesting.

Voyage for Madmen - Peter Nichols
First Golden Globe race, 1968-69. Nine men try single-handedly to sail non-stop around the world, most of them in small, ill-equipped boats, with nothing much more than a sextant and jury-rigged self-steering. Not all would make it.
