It's hard to beat when you add a mandolin in a live setting, although it doesn't feature here. There's another version that features the mandolin a bit more, and adds an accordion as well.

Kim Deschamps on pedal steel and dobro on that album really made it for me. Great player....

Sweet Jane by the Cowboy Junkies is an awesome cover.

Some of my favorite covers include:

Charlotte Gainsbourg covering Hendrix' Hey Joe

Nirvana covering Bowie's Man Who Sold the World

Pet Shop Boys covering Gwen McRae's Always on My Mind

The Beatles covering Chuck Berry's Rock and Roll Music

Cake covering Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive

Fiona Apple covering Beatles' Across the Universe

What else ya got?

And, not a cover, but Lou Reed's live Heroin is fantastic.

Covers? You want covers?

Peter Gabriel covering David Bowie. Heroes. Peter doesn't run around like he did in yesteryear, but the man can interpret some song. And I love, love, love me some strings.

Patty Griffin covering Emmylou Harris. That's a very, very tough task.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax36vwZMEGg

Emmylou Harris covering Neil Young. When I saw her perform this as an encore she introduced the song as being from "...that great Canadian philosopher, Neil Young." The band was completely or almost identical, with Kennedy and Rose on guitar/mandolin (I may have them backwards). Loves me some mandolin.

Otis Taylor covering Jimi Hendrix. I saw him years ago, and it was a great, great, great show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NShOQnlNEw

Richie Havens (1960s) covering Gary Wright (1980s). Love, love, love, the cello. Strings. Again. She looks like she's having a lot of fun. I saw him once, about 20 years ago. Very unique - he never picks, and his left hand is unique, as far as I know - he essentially capos everything. For an old guy like me, it was worth the price of admission just to hear him perform "Freedom".

Pearl Jam covering the Who. As an old guy, I find it interesting how the audience didn't seem to recognize the piano intro until the very end. Did I mention that I love strings? Even "back in the day", I always thought that they were the real drivers to this song.

Brian Eno covering Vivaldi - Fullness of Wind. Love this CD.

Brian Eno's concept of ambient music builds upon a concept composer Erik Satie called "furniture music".[3] This means music that is intended to blend into the ambient atmosphere of the room rather than be directly focused upon. Like Satie's notion of music that could "mingle with the sound of the knives and forks at dinner", Discreet Music was created to play in, and blend with, the subtle background audio of various, or any given, situation.[3]

I'm looking forward to your feedback, as well as the musical background (listening, playing), you have to put it in context.

A couple other out-of-left-field covers that always wind up on my personal playlist:

- Bill Frisell's cover of Madonna's "Live To Tell"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCO1gTmZQIM

- Fred Frith's cover of Martha & The Vandellas' "Dancing In The Street"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZfudPXZmgc

And just this morning I heard Metallica's cover of Elton John's "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" and...well, it didn't suck. Really.

Yeah, pretty much any combination of Levin, Eno, Fripp, Gabriel, and similar is ripe. Then add some Laurie Anderson...

Now, where did I put my sombre reptiles? My third uncle is looking for them.

Godsmack covers Led Zeps, Good Times Bad Times is an awesome cover for me.
Covers of Missippi Queen done by Ozzie, Mollie Hatchet, Joyous Wolf and I really like the Foo Fighters version of it.

Rocky Mountain Way covers done by Triumph, Ozzie, Joe Walsh, and Godsmack.
