Probably not to everyone’s taste but Otoboke Beaver…a female hardcore punk band from Japan.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXL1DiBoP_k And something completely different. Laufey, the Icelandic modern jazz chanteuse, guitarist, pianist, and cellist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGDRoPlSbwA |

I'm on a weirdly retro binge right now--started with reading the biography of Woody Guthrie, to Bruce Springsteen's Seeger album (better than people acknowledge, but full disclaimer--I also liked 'Nebraska' although I can't put my hands on it), and today it is Lyle Lovett, 'Large Band' (1989)--which is a genius album.
Background reading to Lovett was a recent New Yorker article about "Country" music: https://www.newyorker.com/podcast/th...-country-music And to round it out, a friend lent me this crossover album in response to the article, to illustrate crossover: "Rhythm, Country and Blues' https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000002OR2...v_ov_lig_dp_it It kills except the last cut--'Patches' -- one of the worst country songs ever. |

Venerable mom died three weeks ago to the day, almost making it to 95 years of age. I picked up her ashes today. Times are rough.
I could tell many tales exalting her 5' 1.25" frame (max), but, with all due respect to others, she was the best human ever. I believe that this was one of her favorites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GrO47WJKTI

Saint Saens, Segovia, Rachmaninoff, Mahalia Jackson, Aaron Copland, Vladimir Horowitz... my parents got around a bit when listening to the classical music scene, but were no fans of the likes of Philip Glass or John Cage. My mother was a fine soprano - always first soprano in her church, until she just got to be too old. My parents used to go to the local symphony a couple of times per year, and I used to do the same, or more frequently, until covid hit - the Baltimore and National Symphonies. I need to start doing that again. While they steadfastly listened to their favorites, I was busy absorbing the wrenching blues of Fred McDowell and John Lee Hooker, as well as the likes of live Grand Funk Railroad and the somewhat symphonic strains of Yes (sometimes 2 or 3 melodies at once - bass, keyboard, guitar, moving in and out like a round), and later other musicians and types of music as I learned of them. At the same time, I still absorbed some appreciation for classical music, and credit that appreciation, if not understanding, to my parents. I may still have the Koss Pro 4AA headphones my parents bought, which were, and still are, so highly regarded. I listened to many an album with those headphones, shielding my parents from the horrors of rock and roll. I distinctly remember going to the symphony just days after 9/11, and hearing what I think was this piece, which I had never heard live before. I'm not 100% sure it was this exact piece, but it was definitely a short piece. As you might imagine, the original program was scrapped, and they played a totally different set than had been advertised. All I really remember is how many times the audience stood and applauded and then broke down during that performance. People bent over and sobbing one minute, standing in reverence the next. I have no idea how the musicians managed to hold it together to perform. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8NOVGHJmRs I'm rambling. It must be time to sign off.

(Mine was a mini too -- it annoyed her to no end that I could change light bulbs that she needed a ladder for. She too was a classical music lover and she too is sorely missed.) That piece is fabulous--my lovely wife identified it from across the room; i did not know it at all. Great piece, great performance... |

As we children got older, she went back to the schools and did substitute teaching, then later full time. When the high school kids saw a diminutive female substitute teacher they smiled and licked their chops. But the juniors and seniors quickly smacked down the underclassmen - "Oh no, you don't mess with Mrs. J!" She just had that sort of demeanor which seemed to negate abuse, at least to some extent, for those who could see it. She could be tough when she had to be, but it was a rare occurrence.

"Tutu" by Miles Davis has been stuck in my head all week...admittedly because I've listened to three or four different versions over these past several days. Killer tune that yields rewarding performances no matter what rendition. Here's the original studio cut:

The Water
The Water
The guy on the left plays guitar and keyboard, the guy on the right plays guitar and drums. They both seem to add some occasional loops. They seem to have broken up or disbanded around 2017. Space Caesar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow9ksR0zdbM I found their 4 album catalog here. Free. Space Caesar is on The Water 2. I also listened to 10 Lbs from their The Water 2 album and thought it was pretty darn good, too. https://thewater.bandcamp.com/album/the-water-2 Kinda trippy, but not excessively so. https://thewater.bandcamp.com/music https://www.facebook.com/thewatermusic

I took my kids to a local music festival two weeks ago and saw Salt and Pepa. I hated rap music when they were a big thing, but my definition of good music has expanded since then. They were super fun, hip-hoppin hard, and had thousands of people screaming out trashy, fun lyrics for an hour - I loved it! Lots of vaping of weed and smoke/mist clouding my kids lungs - not great, but what an initiation! We rode our bikes home in the dark for full effect after the show - just like being a kid again (but with lights).
This song has been on steady play at our house with kids chuckling at all the potty-language lyrics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2FJ8xzcBdc Last edited by d_douglas; 09-27-2023 at 11:32 AM. |
