I always hesitate to click on watch threads, b/c I love watches and need to tamp down N+1 urges. it started in the 4th grade when my science project was a scale model of the "1st clock"-- based on a simple line sketch I saw in a book in the school library.

however, my dad was a child of the depression, so it was/is hard for me to spend X on certain things. I vividly remember coming home on leave from the navy and bringing my C40 with shamals, and him commenting on it being a good looking/purposeful looking bike, and then him being silent for at least 20 seconds after my answer on it costing about $2k. I managed to get over spending >X for bikes (mostly b/c I rode to work 4days/week for over 15 years), and now think I should have an X for watches that will mean 1 (ok maybe 3) watches.

To stay on a lower $x, I hunt for vintage stuff, mainly from my birth year, such as a Hamilton Military issue, Omega Dynamic, Hamilton Odyssee--so quite old, somewhat unique, and I like them.

If I had it to do over, I'd have not purchased most of the watches I have owned over the past 20+ years (most of which I no longer have), because I bought them because I couldn't bring myself to buy the watch I really wanted.

I really like the modern Radiomir, but I don't think I'll ever get over the funky crown guard on the other models that have one.

I know it's considered a fundamental part of the watch's identity, but doggone it, it's weird.

I like the Radiomir as well and used to own a manual 45mm model. Compared to the automatic with crown guard it wore a lot more comfortable and smaller considering it is 1mm larger than most panaerai with the guard.

I might be in the minority, but I prefer 12-hour GMTs, because it's not like I'm going to forget what half of the day the other time zone I'm tracking is in...

The Sinn 356 and 756 were also 12-hour, but they were clever and made the GMT hand smaller than the regular hours hand, so it could be fully concealed when not in use. The 356 and 756 are both chronographs though, which I don't *need* another one of.

Anyone here have experience with the JLC Master Geographic? I'm eyeing either that JLC or a 126710 BLRO for my 40th next December and I'm kinda torn. The JLC is beautiful and keeps a far, far lower profile than any Rolex sports model, but the downside to this is that they don't hold value: I can hop on Chrono 24 and buy a gold variant for way less than MSRP and under $10k when looking at used.

The 126710 BLRO appears to unobtainium at the moment, and my AD last quoted ~5y; gray market is out of the question, I won't pay it. While I do have a 116610, there are gonna be two new additions to the family: my sister is having her first this December and it'll be a boy, and we're expecting in May. If ours is also a boy, it'll be nice to have two timeless pieces to hand down for their first major milestones in life: college graduation, marriage, etc.

Neither watch will be a safe queen, but I usually rock a G-Shock on the day-to-day.

I have a JLC master ultra thin. It is a gem and I love it. It's never going to get back to msrp though That said, I would love a BLRO on a Jubilee. The size is perfect for a sports watch and it is relatively slim. I think every time that the stock market melts, you should give your AD a call or just stop in to say hello every couple of months if you can. Good luck!

I stopped Rolex watching a number of years ago but still love the Pepsi jubilee from the 90s. Curious what the previous post blro was…It’s shocking to see the prices of the new model, which IMO is a bit chunky looking and not to my taste.

Anecdotally, I've heard waitlists have shortened by a lot very quickly, as people are passing up even after waiting years.

Regardless, unless you're riding the short term hype bubbles, watches aren't a good investment vehicle to begin with. Rolex is cashing in themselves and building new factories to increase the volume, so the relative rarity is going to decrease as well. You're better off burying that money in the S&P 500 than keeping your watch scratch-free to cash in on your average 3% YoY return over the next 20 years.

So buy what you want, IMO.

I travel a lot, almost always out of my home time zone.

A GMT face on my garmin fenix is just too convenient, and auto updates.

Once you accept that a quartz watch is perfectly sensible, more affordable, more reliable, and comes in a lot of choices, the world is your Oyster (pun intended). Buy yourself a nice suit (or entire new wardrobe) with the savings.
