you would be surprised. With the sportwagens they had a bit of demand. When I was looking for mine, they were impossible to just buy off the lot, not because they were selling a ton but because whenever a dealer had one, it would get bought quickly.

would it be worth it for volvo? I doubt it but its good to keeo sone people happy

OK, I want a 'ride report' on those BMW 328 wagons! That green one puzzles me though - it looks like the E90 series models, which I drool over, but the middle console actually has a cupholder, which isn't what I've seen in those cars - usually they're in the dash.

I really like my 2014 2.5L Sportwagen, but it's not much on get-up-and-go. A totally fine car, just not one to fall in love with.

True, but the average VW buyer probably skews younger and "sportier" than the average Volvo buyer (notwithstanding Polestar shoppers).

It's the previous generation (the E46) but with E90 wheels. Not fitted by me - the previous owner did it - but I don't mind them.

The ride is quintessential rear-drive, analog BMW before they started getting larger, heavier, more digital, and more inoculated against driving feedback. It's not really possible to find a car like this anymore rolling off a modern assembly line.

You have that right. Spent 14 years with the e46 sedan version. Not cheap to keep on the road, but always put a smile on my face. The mass market doesn't want a driving "experience" anymore and that's being reflected in an increasingly number chassis.

i have an e90 wagon right now, i love it. I had an e46 before this for about 3 years and had NON STOP ISSUES. That car was a mess, and i bought it with full service documentation, down to each oil change at the dealer. Bad luck

Depends where you live. Some states don't require front plates. NY does though!

I had an E46 wagon for years and had great luck with it (my father in law still has it with 305k - albeit he has probably put his mechanics kid through college) but I'm amazed how well that car has held up. I've had the F31 wagon since May and I don't miss the straight 6. Twin turbo 4 cylinders give me all the punch I need and I'm averaging over 30mpg. The handling makes me look forward to every corner.

Love our 2003 Jetta TDI wagon!

But it is showing its age. Started smoking, check engine light: cylinder 3 wasn't warming up. Dealer replaced cracked glowplug harness, found another 3k worth of things to fix (valve springs, gaskets, suspension springs/etc.). Then found low compression in cylinder 2. Plus it's due for a new timing belt (180k on it now) – probably another 1.5k of work.

So, I find myself looking at newer cars now. The newer VWs drive nice enough, but none of the sedans seem to have the combo of goodness that the wagon does! For those who are in their SportWagens, how do you find it? I'd like to get into something more modern, but under $15k... (Wonder if I'd get 5-6k trade-in for my "old faithful"?..)

love my 2016

Just seems to do most things right. Fast enough, comfy, handling, economy, utility, quality build, sensible and easy to use tech. So far no issues. Love the simple Euro looks. Think you could get a 2015 for $15K.

Just watched the new motorweek series today featuring the now in America Jaguar XF wagon. Beautiful car, solid performance, just wish it wasn’t a jag.

You basically have it, the Volvo v90, and the e350 Mercedes for viable luxury sportwagons....all for $70k or more.

I picked up plants and such this weekend on my e39. I freakin love that car. The dash is lit up like a Christmas tree with all the things wrong with it and I could tally into the twenty thousands all of the stuff it needs to be tip top. But i like it just the way it is and I’m really struggling with the thought of letting it go considering what it’s worth.

Sportwagons rule.

What we really need are upscale wagons. The Volvo V50 (and V70 to an extant) filled that niche, as did the Saabs and Acura TSX.

A shame that a true wagon (one that can haul stuff) is at least 50k...

what you mean by that? the sportwagen starts at 25k... can haul plenty of stuff.

there are plenty of upscale wagons, cadi, mercedes, volvo, jag now...

what we need is less upscale wagons

those are all luxury wagons



that said, nice CPO V60 are going for ~25k right now. But they are quite small and are more like an extended shooting brake.

yeah, i still wish there were cheap japanese wagons still around.

like a civic/accord/corolla wagon or whatever.

when i was looking for a car, i looked for a wagon for nearly a year, nothing came up that met my specs. (i'm at a very, very different end of the market than the cars posted in this thread)

ended up "settling" for a honda hatchback.
