Evil skies around Portland the past couple weeks means wet roads, rain jackets, "flapped" fenders and booties in full effect.

First off, it's not an incline, unless you call 1-2% an "incline". When using a wide angle lens photos tend to distort a bit. Secondly, that road is straight and flat for probably 3.5miles which affords excellent sight lines in both directions. The second someone yells "car back" we immediately go single file or at most two-up. This is a route and a road we've been riding on a weekly basis for probably 8-10yrs with not a single problem, horn honk, irate driver etc. SO, "hogging up the whole lane on an incline" doesn't work here.

Recreational group riding is not "practicable" riding
1-2% is an incline which means unless you're Tour Pros, your average speed would be below 25mph, under the legal speed limit. In California at least, you're breaking the law by riding 2-3 abreast. Have a nice day.
http://www.calbike.org/bicycling_in_...aring_the_road WHERE YOU CAN RIDE If you're moving as fast as traffic, you can ride wherever you want. If you're moving slower than traffic, you can still "take the lane." The law says that people who ride bikes must ride as close to the right side of the road as practicable except under the following conditions: when passing, preparing for a left turn, avoiding hazards, if the lane is too narrow to share, or if approaching a place where a right turn is authorized. I have no sense of humor when it comes to breaking laws and putting myself at mortal risk.

Is that lane “to narrow to share”? It seems like a car wouldn’t be able to give you three feet even if you were riding on the lane edge. That would worry me with the sold yellow middle line. It seems like a good place to take the lane or risk being pushed off the side of the road. Not trying to be provocative or looking for nasty responses, just other people’s perspective.
