I'm still fond of this version (always have been), although I'm sure that there are many great renditions of this song.

It always struck me as a gospel song, no matter what Edge said.

FWIW, I've always thought that the choir would be just fine without the choir director. Choirs that good don't need anyone to tell them what to do or when to do it.
