Don't know if the biopace helped at all, but def brings back fond memories of my first real road bike, a late 80's made in USA Cannondale that came with 105 biopace. |

From the tags on this thread, it seems that someone is offended by Mark McM.

I know they're back again from some manufacturer touting their superiority.
I'm not an emoji guy, but a sledge hammer over a head might get the idea across. I rode a free commuter bike to work in Seattle for well over a year equipped with BioPace. I tossed those suckers into the woods somewhere in celebration of giving that bike away without BioPace. I saw "Shaun of the Dead" a few years later, and felt like I did the day I threw my BioPace. Biopace rings were 90 degrees away from the current oval ring options. They didn't help anything, they changed things in the exact opposite way from what could theoretically be helpful, making the force required highest when your pedals were in the least mechanically advantageous position.

When I first got interested in cycling, there was some kind of crackpot elliptical chainring…made by Durham, I believe. It was so exaggerated that it would not work with a front derailleur. Most people considered it a joke, but it had its devout followers…probably the type who would have been attracted to recumbents had they been available at the time. You have to give credit to Shimano for the push they gave to Biopace. I wonder if the engineers who worked on Biopace moved over to the crankset department …
