Some of that comes from (west?) africa, which became fife and drum music in the North Mississippi Hill Country (northeast MS). Sid Hemphill and Otha Turner are the two most famous.

As for Junior, it's one of my great regrets that I missed my one chance to see him before he died. His CD Most Things Haven't Worked Out, is fantastic.

I love it. I would have jumped at a chance to see him but I never had that chance. That said I do the next best thing and enjoy what he (and many others) left us. I find myself really enjoying the North Mississippi (hill country) blues. I'll be adding Most Things Haven't Worked Out to my "Look for" list.

Wait until it gets dark outside. Not adult dark, but real honest dark. Get half drunk - ONLY half. Turn the lights out. Put on Most Things. Turn it up.

Add Otha Turner's "Everybody Hollerin' Goat" to your list.

I guess the next question should be...ONLY half drunk on what? Some good shine, Tequila, whiskey, Rum? I'm partial to good Tequila myself but I'm open to suggestions.

Otha Turner added to the list!

It's north Mississippi, so probably beer, whiskey, or shine.

Otha was a great homemade fife player, but on this track he provides just vocals, solid doses of encouragement, the occasional cough, and plenty of laughter, especially at the end.

Otha with Luther Dickinson on guitar, RL Boyce on drums, and others I recognize but can't name. Luther is a son of the late great Jim Dickinson. With his brother Cody and friends such as Chew, they form the North Mississippi Allstars. That's RL Boyce at the front wearing sunglasses. He's a regular in the area. At around 5:00 there's a guy with a beard in the back. That's Jim Dickinson.

The real deal. I was lucky enough to see him a few times before he died, aged approximately age 95.

Very cool! Been listening to the NMA for a while now after being turned on to RLB back in the early 00's.

Arrggh... I made the mistake of listening to another tune from that 1982 Donna Summer album (produced by Quincy Jones), and so now "I've got my finger on the trigger, love is in control" is on autorepeat in my brain.
