Not to brag, but I managed to have a fun time with my gf 7 hours after outpatient surgery for same. This was years ago now, but I may be comparing apples to oranges....

FWIW, a redo of same patient and Dr. soon after initial surgery. Wife assures this is usually non compliant patients in terms of recovery.

My brother in law was dragging hose [full of water] in yard 2 weeks after scope surgery, pain, Dr revisit and extended recovery time. This is semi recent and my wife expects he will be back in for that one.

I don't want to be quite that stupid, but close.

I didnt say that.

I was only speaking to the rehab guidelines, in general, are aimed at getting people back to a fairly low level of activity like desk jobs, housework, walking, etc. Its the same if you go into any PT office and look around at the level of rehab being done, and its not rehab for guys that like to do 100 mile rides on the weekends.

I've been told more than once that not being able to ride your bike for 5 hours is not a medical condition. Or that crossfit, mountain biking, weight lifting are all dangerous activities. So these are all just questions to ask with your doctor and perhaps get a 2nd opinion. In some cases active recovery can really speed your recovery up and in others it may set you back.

So if you find a good doctor or PT that really understands being active and how to help get you back there, stick with them.

I gifted myself an "Open" inguinal hernia repair for my 50th Birthday on January 23rd this year. The procedure went very well, and I recovered pretty quickly (I didn't take any of the prescription pain medicine after the 2nd day). I was told it was a big hernia, not sure how the size of the repair might impact recovery.

My doctor basically told me to "take it easy and if it hurts don't do it".
So I started taking daily walks a couple of days after the procedure, ramping up intensity/duration. I really think it helped with my recovery. I did a couple of very easy trainer rides a week after the procedure, but thought I might be pushing it so I took a few more days off the bike (I kept going for daily walks).

Looking back at Strava I rode on the trainer just about every day from February 3rd through the end of the month. By the middle of February I was mixing in some intensity rides on Zwift, but it was mainly alot of Zone 2 stuff. I did a couple of outside rides at the end of February.

By March I was basically back to riding like normal, mainly on the trainer but mixing in more intensity. I haven't had any issues, and I don't notice it/think about it at all anymore.

I am really just looking to be ready for spring. I am off my riding fitness currently. I came off the bike 8/24 [1st time in 25 yrs] and had a pretty deep quad muscle injury. Dr. called it crushing injury. I hit a stationary post @ 6 mph [gps] and that did the stopping. 11 days out got on wife's EV bike, a week later very easy flat ride under my own power.

I was in middle of renovation of garage into quilting center, and stalled that for 5 weeks for the recovery. Just a few rides then once I got reno [I worked every day for a month til] done. Nary a bike ride, trainer or outside. A few woods rides since. not riding terribly, not too unhappy.

So post surgery I kinda gotta get 2x injury fitness back in time for spring, lots of time. Although for my few woods jaunts the leg seems fine, power out of saddle good, stay out of saddle like normal etc. Still has marks at impact site 90ish days later.

There's the BLOG of it...

Had laparoscopic surgery to repair an ‘minor’ inguinal hernia about four years ago. Based on personal experience very little should go wrong with this procedure when done by a surgeon that specializes in this type of hernia repair. General surgeons that perform one or two (or fewer) of these operations every month are to be avoided. Also if you are having this done at a teaching hospital insist that no student ‘assist’ is involved. Better yet, look into surgical groups that perform this these operations exclusively.
