Slaying the Demon, Score: Demon 2, Rider 1
Precisely one year ago today I was hit by a cargo van (Score: Demon 1), smashing my pelvis. Since then I have not gone on the route where I was hit. Today I had to slay the Demon, so I rode the same route. Winds were 30 mph steady, with 40+ gusts, so a fitting mood. Shoulda listened to my wife.
Being extra cautious, I rode past THE spot with no drama, and soon thereafter was on the relatively safe bike path towards home (Score: Rider 1). Just as all was peachy-keen, and smooth sailing, a car gate barricade made of pipe was caught by a strong gust, swung across the path and BAM! (Score: Demon 2). I hit the top rail with my shifters and hand, and down we all went. Some errant workman left the thing unlock and unlatched. My Garmin was kind enough to suggest it was an emergency, and I should call home. Damage: 1. Pride, 2. Destroyed Ultegra 11 speed left shift lever, 3. Bruised and scuffed fingers and knee - no biggy. Serotta Legend undamaged - yay. So my warning to the haunted rider is to tiptoe around Demons when they are sleeping, (they cheat!), or, as I am considering, take up stamp collecting! |

Wind is my demon. After a few spills on windy days (like having my wheels literally blown out from under me) I no longer go out when it's really windy. Demons are bad, wives are good... Last edited by dgauthier; 11-11-2024 at 04:14 PM. |

Sorry to hear, glad you weren't hurt.
My wife has a card on the fridge: Sometimes I wrestle with my demons. Sometimes we just snuggle.

I thought you weren't supposed to discuss politics.

I'd say a 'different 'demon'' gotcha. It wasn't a car, but that gate had it in for you.
The Golden BB is going to get you regardless so don't dwell on it M |

I wish that I had an identifiable demon to confront other than myself. Just offhand I can't recall a disaster that wasn't self inflected. After a particularly nasty crash the doc asked me why I did those things. I admitted that it was probably because I was just stupid.
Look at the bright side, Flinch. At least the bike was spared and you have possibly gained an awareness of further possible demons to look out for. For me, if I go outside I'm just asking for it. |

Pleased to hear that the demons only inflicted minor physical injuries yesterday. I hope they heal up quickly. Also, kudos to you for getting back out there after the accident a year ago - that would have been the end of riding for a lot of folks. Couldn't have been easy. |
