A good carpenter should be able to find the center of a stud even if there's sheetrock obscuring your view.

1) Tap the drywall and based on the response (sound and what your finger feels) with a bit of practice you can get within an inch or two of the stud centerline. 2) Use a stud finder to locate the nails, and you're there. I've used two types, the electronic kind and the ones with a pivoting magnet. I actually prefer the lower-tech magnet type. Or, if you have several of those small, strong rare earth magnets they will also find and stick to the nails. Put several in a vertical line, and that's your stud location. |

This project taught me about lathe and plaster walls in m 100 year old house. Made finding the studs nearly impossible.

Professionally photograph your bike, frame it, and hang it on the wall. Don't take a pic with your phone but shoot the bike as a real portrait with a camera.

I designed and built this wall rack in 1997 . . .
. . . after seeing similar things being sold in catalogs for exorbitant prices and thinking “Geez, I could do that!”
Oak boards and hardware from Home Despot and some basic sawing using a miter box. It distributes most of the weight of the bikes onto the floor and I’ve got a couple of screws into studs on the wall to keep it steady. It’s worked great for the past 27 years. I also keep my crash helmets hanging on there–crash #1 broken neck and crash #2 brain bleed. They always remind me of how lucky I am to be able to ride my bike(s) and to emphasize safety on rides. I put the Christmas lights on there one year as a joke and they worked so well I’ve kept them. BBD

Paint the silver here the same color as your wall and you are in and out for less than $20
