Coming soon to bikes near you- double hooked rims!
https://bikerumor.com/dandy-horse-double-hook-rim/
Marketing speak misnomer, at least from what I can tell. It's really just a rim that is fluted out a bit for more material to reduce pinch flatting...on tubeless. Revolutionary? Gimmick? |

Another solution in search of a problem?

Too bad they don't show any data indicating that the "double hooked" is any better than the alternatives when it comes to preventing pinch flats, something that would be relatively simple to show in a lab test.

No kidding..Hooked, then hookless, now 'double hook'...what's next? 'Hookah'?
Gotta be to come up with some of this stuff..

Just another way to sell more wheels.

Enve MTB rims also feature a "mushroomed" bead edge for pinch flat resistance:
The "double hooked" rims feature an internal "hook" as well. |

The labeling is odd, but whatevs.
As to wider rims, they’re coming and they’re gonna get crazy wide I think. Zipp’s new XPLR line is, what, 32mm internal? Or was it 35? I think 30+ will become standard in a couple years, at least for gravel wheels. |

So they can't form the hook on the inside but can on the outside?

I welcome anything that makes installation more difficult.

Basically, yes. Carbon rims are formed in molds, and it is difficult to form undercut internal shapes with a rigid mold. After the rim has been baked and set, how do you pull the mold out from the inside the rim sidewalls with the internal hooks in the way?

I would think this would be useless on a road bike. I can remember only one pinch flat in 40 years of riding and it looks like only marginal improvement in pinch flat resistance anyway as compared to foam inserts. Last edited by MikeD; Today at 11:02 AM. |
