Connex chainring wear indictor thinks my new chainring needs replacing

Ordered some stuff from BikeInn a couple weeks ago.
Recalled that they carried the Connex chainring wear indicator tool. Adding it to the order didn't increase shipping cost so I pulled the trigger since it was pretty cheap and I do like tools.

It's essentially as go/no-go gauge.

Problem is, it thinks the brand new chainring that was part of the order and my brand new Athena 11 chainrings are a no-go.

Emailed Connex but no reply after a week.

I'm kinda disappointed.

Return it. Even most tools that measured cog wear on cassettes were 'iffy' at best. Pretty obvious that 'tool' isn't accurate or useful.

Also odd they only show it used on a cog. My guess would be it's useful for that mayyybe.

This tool is fundamentally flawed. The chain roller only interfaces with the lead edge of each tooth, and not the trailing edge, so the shape of the trailing edge matters little. Yet this tool indexes off the non-essential trailing edge of an adjacent tooth. This is similar to (but worse than) chain wear tools that measure between the leading and trailing faces of different rollers (better chain tools index off off the same face of different rollers).
