I use the Silca drip wax, and I haven't tried the hot melt wax thing. So forgive the stupid question: could a person just buy a thrift store saucepan and use it in a water bath on the stove? The wax melt temp is far under water boiling temp.

Yes, you could use a saucepan you already own and plan to keep using and go sous vide(?) method or you could dump the wax in a thrift store saucepan and melt it/store it there forever.
