Shimano Ultegra Pedal - Stopped Clicking In <= "Rivet" on Interior of Pedal??
My Ultegra pedal stopped clicking in mid-ride today. I noticed a small "rivet" on the interior side of the pedal body (circled in diagram below) is now sticking out about 4mm.
Anyone encountered this? Is there a way to "re-seat" the "rivet" so it's not protruding? I'm calling it a "rivet" because there is no slot or spot in its top to insert a tool (e.g., a 2.5mm hex). Appreciate any constructive advice/help!

Looks to me like that's the axle of the locking mechanism. Have you tried (it's hard) to pull back on that to see if it pivots properly?

The rivet is a pin that holds the pedal body together. If you pull it all the way out the rear of the pedal with the spring adjustment will separate from the rest of the body. You can get it to push back in if you hit it with a screwdriver + mallet. That pin has some splines on the opposite end that slot into the pedal body. I'm not sure if it's due to some production adhesive eroding over time, or whether the splines on that pin wear down due to friction causing that pin to come loose, but that pedal is probably on borrowed time. The same thing happened to a pair of 10+ year old pedals that I had. I fixed by putting some superglue on the end of the pin that sits inside the pedal body but the same issue eventually reoccurred, so i just bought new pedals.
If that pin comes out far enough, you won't be able to clip in properly. Last edited by cbass; 10-20-2024 at 12:55 PM. |

Happened to me once as well. I was able to tap that pin back in with a hammer. Those pedals now live on the trainer bike, I don’t trust them on the road.

@cbass and @Wunder, thank you sharing your experience. These pedal bodies are less than a year old, so that's disappointing. But I shall try to tap back in and see what happens.

It might be worth checking to see if they're still under warranty.
