I assume she meant that most hurricanes lose strength once they hit land.. a Cat 2 will quickly become a TS (or less) once it hits shore, not unlike a tornado that fizzles out once it hits different topography.. the change in surface (or water to land in a hurricane) changes the dynamic.. my wife could explain it much better, but that's the basic idea..
