New Rival Crankset with an old drivetrain? other options?
I am looking for a double crankset to use with my vintage SRAM XO 9spd drivetrain. I think the SRAM stuff is beautiful and it works perfectly. I used a Raceface 32/22 on it before and it was flawless, but I have repurposed that crankset, and need another one for another bike. I would like it to be somewhere around a 43-30 or thereabouts (I am flexible).
Would a new SRAM 43-30 crankset work with 9spd SRAM MTB parts? Are the rings too narrow or the tooth profile too modern? What other options are there for a setup that will work perfectly with this 9spd stuff? I could find another Raceface triple crank and just drop the tiny ring again. I am trying to do this cheaply. I know White Industries would do the trick, but I am not in that market.... |

I think the question would be what crank won't work with a 9s drivetrain. I can't think of one. Obvs bottom bracket dictates choices.

I think the chain would be the issue. 12 speed chain probably not great on the cassette and 9 not great on the rings. Sugino OX901 would be a good option (I have one in 46/30 with SRAM 10, would definitely work with 9 speed) but probably out of budget unless you get lucky.

So the width of a 9spd chain wouldnt be too wide and sloppy for a skinny lil SRAM chainring set? Remember, these need to shift on the front - this isnt a 1x system.

Can just use the appropriate speed chain, no? 11s chain will shift very nicely on a 9s drivetrain.

I was talking about the latest 12spd version of Rival .
That said, I just realized I could reuse my vintage Ritchey Logic and buy a 26t ring to go with the 36t middle ring! OG… |
