In North Carolina cyclist may use an entire lane. Having lived and cycled in Maryland for decades it took me some time to get used to NC group rides continue to use the entire lane with cars back. More surprising was seeing police pull over motorists who pass cycling groups in an unsafe manner.

It did not take long for the hair on my left forearm to grow back to full length in NC.

I haven't heard of such a thing for an unorganized group ride, meaning without permission and stuff.

There was a small group that did some big ride or rides in CA. They would pay someone to drive a sag wagon and handle mechanicals. I remember seeing posts somewhere asking if anyone would be interested. I know one of my friends either considered doing it or actually did it. It was a long time ago.

2 abreast is generally safer than a single file line when the group is more than a handful of people. It dramatically shortens the passing distance, and the pass should be made in a place where the driver can fully use the opposite lane anyhow.
