The pedals are balanced so they hang vertically with flat side facing forward and the SPD side facing the rear. To clip in you do need come at the pedal from just ever so slightly behind it so it rotates the correct direction. It's not the "stomp and go" affair that dual-sided SPDs can be, but it's the natural pedaling direction so doesn't require hardly any finesse.
For the flat side one does the opposite: catch the top edge of the pedal with one's midfoot and rotate backwards slightly. Initially this is a bit awkward but it becomes second nature quickly.
