Zero-commission online trading has made it more easily-accessible to retailers, but plenty of traders have always been treating the stock market as a casino. And large entities have always engaged in interesting counterparty games as well.

Like, take the Panic of 1907. It was a financial crisis involving a cascade of bank failures that went international in its scope, alongside a nearly 50% crash in the American stock market... caused by a copper baron family's failed attempt to short-squeeze their own company stock.

And to put it mildly, folks writing about Wall Street in the 30s and 40s generally did not view stock traders as paragons of fundamental analysis and stable behavior.
