Sad news. He was a terrific actor. I know little about the rest of his life, which in a way, is also a big compliment.

Yes, a life well lived and that voice. RIP.

Just perused his filmography, what a prolific actor. I had no idea he was in Dr. Strangelove.

Well damn. He was one of the good ones. RIP Mr. Jones and thanks for all the wonderful work. His debut was in one of the best movies ever made, Dr. Strange love.

What a voice and presence! I could listen to him reading the Yellow Pages: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4igkM5UqIEs.

You mentioned his voice. In Dr. Strangelove, a young guy pops his head through a hatch in the cockpit floor and starts talking in Darth Vader's voice. It didn't really dawn on me that it was James Earl Jones until I had seen the movie multiple times.

Yes, Dr. Strangelove.
Of my generation, but something new taken in with each viewing.
He was a great voice and a very good actor.
He set a high bar.

I tear up every time I watch this.

RIP, indeed.

“The word I don’t like is ‘race,’ ” he said, sitting in a Georgetown hotel room. “Black is obvious, ethnic is obvious. But race is the division between us all.”

Perhaps it was the adversity he faced as a child in Mississippi and Michigan, raised by his maternal grandparents, that instilled in him a self-belief that rejected reflexive definition. He was, astonishingly given the arc of his life, a severe stutterer in childhood — practically mute, he said, until he was 14. He found his voice in high school, in the lyricism of literature. “It was through poetry I began to speak that other language, where the R’s were rounded: Longfellow, Shakespeare, Chaucer,” he recounted.

His Big Bang Theory cameo (with Carrie Fisher!) was comedic gold. He deftly poked fun at himself, displaying a sense of humor most didn't know he possessed. RIP to one of the greats of the big screen.
