A bike I regret not owning? A custom Ti Spectrum fitted by Tom Kellogg!
If you take out the word "regret" and are talking about bikes I have admired but never owned: a modern lugged steel frame and fork. Last edited by dgauthier; 08-30-2024 at 12:52 AM. |

I would love to have my old Bianchi SLX that was made in Bianchi’s custom shop in Italy. I believe it was early 90’s vintage. Everything else I want I have.

I wish I had a Look 585 to compare to me C40.

I've owned many many bikes, over 90% of them steel with steel forks. I've had nice riding aluminum with steel, aluminum and carbon forks. The only carbon bikes I've owned were older, so I can't comment on the latest. I think the latest I rode was a Colnago C40 and that was years ago. But, I did like it, with the Star fork as I recall. Because I am a "steel" kinda guy, it was the variety of tubing that mostly interested me, always looking for the right blend of light, comfortable, without being too flexible. The most modern steel bike I own is made from Pego-Richie Uber OS tubing, with lugs and matching fork. Lovely riding bike and I like the larger tubes. I'm not sure what the latest technology is in steel tubing, but if I were looking, I'd be looking for steel frame and fork, with the latest design that meets my criteria of light, comfortable, but not overly flexible.

A bike I regret not owning never existed — a C-40 that fits 30mm tires.

Bamboo for sure. One day it’ll happen. But I’m a 3 is enough for bikes.

Modern shaped/thin-wall aluminum. Maybe someday.
Bamboo would be fun to try at some point, but I'm not holding my breath. |

Yeah, I wanted Tom to make a Spectrum frame just like my Merlin Works CR that he designed but with a slightly steeper seat tube. He said he could do it but he retired before I could order.

You're lucky you didn't. A coworker weighed only about 125# and he broke his Calfee bamboo frame. Not strong enough a material for long lasting bike frames, IMO. Kinda like those old cast magnesium frames made by Kirk Precision where they all broke.

I've always wanted an aluminum race bike. Cannondales were all the rage when I raced, but my geo requirements necessitated custom and, for whatever reason, I never went there.
