Day of the Hour Records

This happened last weekend at the track in Milton.

A few impressive records set. Too bad there was not more media attention.

Female - 65-69 - Barb Morris set a Canadian record of 38.838 km. Record is 42.194
Male 65-69 - Ralph Schatzmair - world record - 44.662km
Female - 85-89 - Pat Baker - world record - 24.978km
Male 80-84 - Derek Steel - world record - 39.836km

Some people make me proud. I had an 80 year old lady who did my Senior games races. Her time trial times beat the 50 year old tough women. She had moved to the US in the 50s from Netherlands.

The only downside with these is cost, Cycling Canada and Milton have made it prohibitively expensive to attempt an Hour Record, use to be reasonable for track time. Not so much now, become another game for the rich. but some impressive distances and speeds.

The attempt fee alone is $3000.00.

Three thousand bucks?! OK, that is a lot. Guess some old-timers just miss the rat race more than others.

Another poster implied that the fee was a lot of money. My point was that at the age of these record attempters, 3K isn't really a lot of money. Especially so when you consider these competitors are willing to spend money on experiences as opposed to things.

Three grand is 'nothing' only when you're loaded, age plays no role here.

If you know what it takes to put on a Hour Record, this is not that much. I have Coached or consulted a dozen or so athletes and have done 4 record attempts myself that set two records.

The Record attempts I have done have been in Colorado Springs, MX and Bolivia. The cost is about the same in all the places. Here are major cost to consider.

* UCI Officials- These need to be experienced in Record attempts. Will likely need to fly them in and cover all their travel cost and salary. 5-7 people.
* Will need to rent at least 2-days full days of the velodrome. Day of attempts and practice day.
* Might need to bring in Tissot time equipment or similar equipment and staff to run it and cover their travel. Many Velodromes don't have UCI approved timing.
* Will need to bring in Doping Control, min of 3 people, one administrator and two chaperones
* Pay for the Drug testing, I paid $800 last year.
* Someone has to organize all the things above and do the paper work for the National Federations and the UCI and get approval to do the attempt.
* If the Velodrome does not have a UCI jig, one will need to be shipped in.

I could list more but you get the idea. No one is making money on these, it just takes a lot to attempt a World Record.

Wow. I simply hope I'm on the right side of the dirt at that age, let alone as physically and cognitively fit as him! We should all be so lucky!
