Greenbrier River Trail in WV - experiences?

Hello, all - looks like I'm spending the holiday weekend out at a barn party in WV, and I'll be right by the Greenbrier River Trail. Seems like a perfect opportunity to get some miles in on the gravel bike!

Would love any info you can give me about riding the trail, the best trailheads to use (I'll be in Hillsboro, WV), trail conditions, etc.

I actually spent a couple of weeks bike packing on it almost 20 years ago.

Very cool and I loved it ... watch those pop up storms!

West Virginia is beautiful, and everyone I met was super friendly and stopped to chat.

That horse drawn wagon was loaded to the gills with everyone from Grandma down to a baby and I think even a bbq grill.

I’ve cycled the southern-most end of the trail from Lewisburg, but not been up as far north as you’ll be.

It’s well maintained, smooth gravel. Grades are reasonable, at least the southern end, but I don’t think it has any big spikes in grade further north.

It can be pretty remote and I doubt you’ll get cell service the whole length, so be sure have meal/snack plans made, offline maps, etc already prepared before you leave if doing anything more than a basic out-back.

Should make for a quiet relaxing ride.

Maybe this will help. South to north is all verrrrry gradually uphill.
When I was a kid riding to school, the same was true of north to south (and it was always 102 degrees under a blazing hot sun and snowing blizzardly with a -102 windchill. And raining.)
Nowadays though, you kids have it easy: North to south is all downhill.

I've cycled it and its a good trail, though perhaps slightly more boring than the New River trail. Lewisburg is a charming little city, and well worth riding up to it on the bike from the southern end of the trail. On the north end of the trail, Cass is very nice, and a good place to eat lunch and do a little sightseeing. The railroad there is historic. Watoga State Park is at your fingertips from Marlington and is a very nice park. You can rent a cottage there, virtually right on the trail. Most all WV Parks are very nice. WV does a very good job with their parks, offering a lot to campers and travelers.

Marlinton to Cass is the best trail around IMHO.
