An alloy quill adapter is a solution I've used in the past.

I wedge an allen wrench in there - the biggest one you can fit in. And then slightly twist it, to spread the clamp open a little bit. If that doesn't get you enough room, fit a larger size allen wrench in (using the previous one to spread it and allow the bigger one to fit), and then repeat. This has let me fit one of these wide quill mounts around the curves of an 106NAS before... It's a little nerve wracking but the metal is pretty forgiving.

I haven’t but it looks like another good solution. More money though…

I think you need a frictionless bearing to get the bolt to move freely enough to enlarge the opening. Or maybe it'll work better if you do it on a treadmill?

Bar on bike above is a Deda deep. The bends are not as tight as some RHM styles. I have gotten a mtb stem to work with a RHM bar before; depends on stem width. Old mtb stems came in a variety of angles and lengths. Chrome moly is very flexible, springy--spreadable. Triming the clamp edge corners creates more clearance for bar installation if necessary.

I have used Soma HWY1 bars with multiple quill stems and the bars can be frustrating to mount, since the compact bend is so sharp.
I remove the stem bolt, use a flathead screwdriver to hinge the opening more, and keep it open while I route the bars into the stem. There is a lot of leverage applied with the flathead screwdriver. I am sure someone will nerd out and provide detailed reasoning why the material/shape cant handle such stresses. Ive done it on Nitto 0deg stems, Nitto Pearl stems, random Kalloy stems that are new, random Kalloy and other branded stems that are 30+ years old, and Origin8 stems that are probably just rebranded Kalloy. None have broken, none showed wear or concern. Obviously not enough data to declare it is fine, but I certainly never felt uncomfortable riding the bikes and I tug on the bars a good bit. |
