I ran 175' CAT6 out to my shop. Before that I put a hole in the wall for A USB wire to a USB dongle 'outside my steel clad cage.
I bought a steel edger and ran it 125' across the yard 9" deep and prodded the cable down into the groovy slot I made. Took about an hour.

When I needed more than one PC on the net, I got tired quick trying to have the second PC share form the other. Re fixing it way too much when I wanted to do something on the net.

Ethernet over power has a 300m range.

If you've got power from house to barn you could put a pair of adapters on either side of the line. Cheap and works well in my experience. I use it in my house and it works fine even across different circuits.

PS: not to be confused with 'power over ethernet'.

Interesting. Would this work between two buildings with completely separate electric service?

TP Link makes some directional APs that can be used for point to point. It may be overkill given you're only looking to provide connectivity to one item, but they definitely have some solutions which are designed to bridge distance solutions.
