This is the reason I said "supposed benefits". Makers of hookless rims have been claiming that their benefits to hookless rims, when in fact there are essentially no user benefits at all (and several deficits). But marketing and advertising are strong, so some consumers may be convinced that there are really are benefits.
An example of this is paired spoke wheels. When Rolf introduced their paired spoke wheels, they claimed many benefits. The marketing/advertising for this design was strong, so many wheel makers followed suit and introduced their own paired spoke wheels (including Bontrager, Shimano, Vuelta, Alex, and others). But the supposed benefits of paired spokes never materialized, but their deficits did, so once the "fashion craze" for paired spokes disappeared, so did paired spoke wheels.
(A major difference between hookless rims and paired spoke wheels is that although both had more deficits than benefits to the user, hookless rims are benefit to the manufacturer, so despite their user deficits they will probably stick around.)
