There is much we don’t understand about human psychology. I remember reading some articles about amateur dopers several years ago and what stuck with me is that several said they yearned to win at something at be celebrated by their mates. When framed that way, it’s tied to disaffection, sadness, and the lack of fulfillment that many middle aged people feel (perhaps men especially who tend to have fewer friends and weaker support networks).
