That totally makes sense. The auto-trim might not actually work on the older derailleurs if the cages are excessively wide.

Heck this probably explains a lot of the complaints on older groups where some riders say everything is fine and others say the front derailleur is a disaster. How precisely you align that front derailleur cage and your personal shift/trim habits can be a big difference. Things as subtle as where in the pedal stroke/crank rotation you shift is important, especially if you're talking mechanical where there is no computer to second guess you.

Both theories are a bit farfetched: The first being that SRAM front shifting is a problem only if you use SRAM cranks, and the second being that the problems are due to bad mechanics (including some world tour team mechanics.)
