ancient saddle designs

In 1954 I got a Schwinn (Traveler maybe?) which was what kids called "an English racer". It was VERY much like a Raleigh built in England: 3 speed Sturmey-Archer hub. caliper brakes, bottle generator and headlight. The saddle was covered in fake leather that was waterproof supported by steel coil springs that ran for/aft from a steel frame.

Even riding hot and sweaty in Chicago Summers while wearing jeans I don't remember ever having a sore butt. I know it had to be heavy but it was probably lighter than the "tractor" seats of my pals' Schwinn Phantoms. are saddles like this still made/used anywhere?
