Tubular wizards...

I am fairly new to tubs and have a set of Bora 1 35 and looking to replace the tubs on them and am sticking to the same set that have been on them which is 24 mm......the external width of the rim is 24mm...looking to pick up some Mariposa tape which they make in various widths but 20 seems the closest....will 20 tape do it? or do I need to find something closer to 24? The Mariposa stuff jumps from 20 to 25. Any advice? and Yeah, realize the whole gluing vs tape stuff...but looking to do tape etc. Thanks....

My 27mm outer Bontrager tubular rims I was using the M 25mm tape. I would assume the 20mm would be just fine in your case. Email them to confirm. That tape is fantastic. Used it exclusively for years.

Mariposa Tape

I switched to the Mariposa tape several years ago after using glue since the late 70s. I have the 35s with and without the AC3 rim treatment. The AC3 is slightly wider but I use 20mm tape on both. I run 22mm tires on both and the tape on the AC3 wheel is just a smudge off from being edge to edge. I’m ok with this but if you are not then go with the wider tape, mount it flush to one edge of the rim, mount, pump, and center tire but do not pull the top plastic cover off yet, then use an exacto blade to trim the excess tape, release air pressure, pull tape and pump tire. Hope this helps!

I've been using the Mariposa tape for 5+ years on all my tubs (9 wheelsets). The only two wheelsets I use the 20mm tape on is my Boyd's and Vison Metron's which are both 25mm wide and even then it seems like a bit of overkill. My default is the 17mm tape partly because most of my rim widths are 23mm or less (yeah old narrow aluminum rims). The 17mm tape on the 23's is pushing it but the width of the tire being 20mm, I've never had any issues with a roll-off.

You'll do well with the 20mm wide tape on the Bora's.

Enjoy the tubs, I find it increasingly more difficult to ride clinchers and I wish more people would take the tubular plunge.

Tubular wizards don't use tape, they use glue

I have used tape once before and honestly the reason why I don't like it was because it was IMPOSIBLE to remove the tire. So my guess is you would be fine with the 20.

Not the case with Effetto Mariposa Carogna. Comes off easy and completely clean. Glue is for the birds.

Excellent choice of wheels. I have the same in DB and they are amazing.

I'm firmly () in the glue camp. Now, I have never tried tape but given the number of times one has to change a tire I don't think the time savings is really significant. Unless a rim has been reglued multiple times (and poorly so there's a lot of dingleberries built up) it takes me less than 30 minutes to put on a new tire using the OldPotatoe method (glue tire, glue rim, glue tire, glue rim, install, pump up and let sit overnight0. No need to dry overnight between coats, and I have ridden a tire within an hour of gluing it and lived to tell (gasp).

Tubasti

by Aldo Ross

Tubasti on the sidewalls
Tubasti on the spokes
Tubasti on the workbench
And a bunch of cotter bolts

Tubasti on the visegrips
Tubasti on my arm
Tubasti on my chin and cheek
I hope it won't cause harm

Tubasti on the light switch
Tubasti on the cats
Tubasti on my shoes and socks
And on my car's floor mats

Tubasti on the carpet
Tubasti in my hair
I tried to glue just one damn tire
Now Tubasti's everywhere

Had this same experience the first time I tried Tufo tape, now over 10 yrs ago. FWIW there was a thin old coat of glue on the alloy rim before I applied the tape; I didn’t acetone it down to a clean rim bed.

It took me quite a long time using a screwdriver to get the tire off. Tire levers and other milder pry tools had no effect. And then it took even longer to get the tape off of the rim.

Completely swore off tape at that point, and have been gluing tires since.

Reviewing the above replies, maybe it’s time for me to revisit the issue.
