Nah, these are kinda the beenie babies of the petite bourgeoisie; someone's service to country is a bit more impressive, to me at least. I inherited an even sillier watch (a Patek), and sometimes scratch my head at the naivete behind its purchase long ago. One day I'll get past my sentimentality and sell it to fund something (or someone) more meaningful.

In Boston/Northeast/Ri would be ideal.

I have a 1950s Patek that I had serviced by the factory in Geneva, via the AD Henri Stern in nyc. Two big take aways from that experience:

1. The service price had a comma in it….

2. The factory tends to want to bring the watch back to “like new”, which means polishing it, replacing parts, etc. This may make sense if you inherited the watch and plan to wear it and then pass it down one day yourself (my case), but probably has a negative effect on value. I’d just be really explicit about what they are replacing.

In NYC I’d call Grand Central Watch. In Boston maybe start with European Watch Co.

Now with GMT.

I've seen photos of these Seiko 5 GMTs and they look interesting. I have adjusted Seiko autos to +- 1 second per day, which is Rolex or better.

I've outlned my own 12 step program regarding German and Swiss autos above. They are beautiful little machines and a technological anachronism. And from a status point of view, the reality is that very few people will pay any attention to what watch you are wearing, so wear what you like.

If I were thrown into a survival situation, I would, in a heart beat, choose a Citizen or Seiko solar. Far more accurate short term and, more so, long term, and more durable.

Don't get me started on the "soul" BS. They are both machines.

A piisshaw..civilians don't appreciate the value of some parts of a military life. Yup, I couldn't afford the BMW or airplane or condo in Aspen my airline driving buds could but...

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe" Bt don't die.
I could have bought a Rolex Oyster in the ship's little exchange for $190...and I was also about to do al all expenses paid tour of the Mediterranean for 6 months..It really was 'more than a job", it WAS an adventure. But you know all that.....Good on ya Master Chief...
