^^^Sounds reasonable to me. I hate everyone who has nicer things than me. Bastards!

I really like it. aesthetically it appeals to me.

i dont think it's too uncommon for a wealthy person, or perhaps a corporation or some other business to spend this kind of money on a piece of art, sculpture, etc for a display piece in a lobby or something like that.

It's beautifully done (though maybe I would have had the seatpost done instead of the saddle, but that's picking fly poop from the pepper) and I'm sure worth it to the buyer of the bike, otherwise they never would have commissioned it.

The bike's only got to wow the person buying it, at the end of the day.
A friend of mine owns a custom motorcycle shop. They build bikes from scratch that bill out over $200k that are never ridden but go straight into a private collection. Some are really cool, some, well not so much, but the client is over the moon and in the end that is all that counts.

I think it's cool as my friend solves very difficult engineering problems with artful execution and world class craftsmanship. For that I'm very thankful for his patron as I get to see the builds first hand.

BINGO!

I wouldn't build it, but I like when people clearly have a vision for something and act on it.

I say well done.

I give Festka credit; they have very artistic paint jobs, some of which I like and some I don't like. But there's EFFORT involved.

I put them in the same box as Dario's Pegoretti's, Landsharks, and Speedvagens.

Frankly, I didn't even notice the matching wheels. What stuck in my mind was the matching stem, and the seat (which paint job would probably wear away). While I may not like it, I respect the detail and labor involved.

Impressive.

plenty of folks drop $20k+ on bicycles, you just don't know it.

ps: festka is very technically involved in what they do as bike builders. moreso than most custom builders. ymmv.

Did I miss something? OP's photos showed some lovely -- but decidedly black -- Lightweight wheels.

And this banana taped to a wall sold for $120k. Regular banana. Probably cost 50 cents. Your point?

I heard the bike was destroyed in a tragic accident. The buyer took it out for a quick ride, and he punctured a tire. Apparently, all the sealant spewing from the tubeless tires ruined the paint. So sad.

Anyone care to do price breakdown and illustrate to us how this gets to $35k?

Paint would seem to be the greatest unknown but someone on here with more bike knowledge than me (frankly most of you) can probably price out the frame/wheels/group/etc to get a base material cost.

Hmmm, let's see . . .
  • Festka's Top "Stock" Frameset = ~$10k
  • Lightweight's Top Wheelset = ~$10k
  • Red eTap Group w/Power = ~$3.5k
  • Brakeset = ~$850
  • Carbon Saddle (Can't tell which brand, used Berk) = ~$550
  • Stem = ~$600
  • Bar = ~$700
  • Post = ~$700
TOTAL (so far) = $26,900

Add $3,100 for custom geo, misc. parts, & assembly, that leaves $5k for the paint job, using Cobalt Blue and 24k Gold.

Yep, I can get to $35k
