Yes. I was watching an old 1993 spring classics video a few weeks ago. Phil Liggett comments, " The Italians are really on a high. They have won 92 of the first 100 races so far this year." Too funny.

Need help: Vintage Campagnolo Shamal wheel type
Resurrection.
Look same as OP. 16/16 spoke count. Decals. So these are 8 speed only? But cassette body swap allows for 9/10/11? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by Jgrooms; 07-20-2017 at 09:48 AM. |

Yes, use a FH body from last gen Record or Chorus hubs, 1997/8 generation. Plug and play. Steel axle or ti axle, type. You can use Athena or Veloce FH body as well but need to include the axle..

Yes to the above, but with a small caveat: The drive side spokes on the original 8spd Shamals were a little more outboard than on later 9/10spd Shamals, so if you convert the 8spd Shamals to 9/10spd, the derailleur will be a little closer to the spokes. Because of the angle of the spokes, derailleur clearance on any wheel is dependent on sprocket size, so the smaller the cassette you use on the converted Shamals, the greater the chances you will have of derailleur rub. So, don't use a 12-21 cassette on the converted Shamals, but a 12-25 or larger should be fine.

Oops! Yes, you're right, these 'standard' hubs should be fine with a freehub swap. I was thinking of the set of Shamals with HPW hubs that I converted from 8spd to 9/10spd.

Data point...I can confirm that the original Shamals can be easily converted to a 9 speed freehub body and will not have clearance issues with even a 21 tooth large cog. I have a set hanging in my basement that have been used in that configuration for years.
