silver bullet wheels?
I have a bit of discretionary income and want to start doing some racing and would like to upgrade my current wheels. But this whole task of wheel shopping is kind of daunting. About all I've arrived at is that I don't want tubulars. The rest feels like voodoo. I'm 190lbs right now but tend to be around 177lbs normally (post-surgery belly.)
Any suggestions for a good compromise wheel set? I like hills and flat rides, so it seems like some of the deeper wheel sets aren't a great all around fit for a rider like me. I can't imagine dropping more than $1500. Riding and having fun seems like the most part. A rockn wheel set is just a luxury, but one that I'd like to indulge currently. Thanks |

I think Ergott is building up Rail rims now. Might fit the bill.

Repeat more or less what I said in my post and he should be able to get me setup?
Any thoughts or considerations worth mentioning? |

If you ride Campy.....I think standard clincher Zonda's.....aluminum and medium depth.....for less than $400 at UK shops, are about equal to most $800-$1000 custom wheel sets. Also come with Shimano cassette bodies. About 1550 grams, no rim strips needed, 16/21 F/R flat steel spokes, put tires on with fingers, and Campy loose ball bearings. Spokes available around here for repair, but maybe not everywhere so easy.
Shimano makes some nice wheels also. Shimano shops everywhere. For travel bike, I use hand builts, 32/32 for ease of service. If money no object, lots of wheel sets out there. Custom and factory made. |

If you're racing, don't get bling wheels. Crashes happen. :nod
I built myself a pair of 'DIY Carbon' carbon clinchers for a total outlay of $350. If I wreck em, oh well. They've lasted over a year now, so I'm ahead of the game $-wise M |
