If you are brand new to racing do not spend a fortune in my opinion. Like others have said, the Cannondale CAAD's are great bikes that should not cost you too much. If you are doing crits I would go with an aluminum frame, something that can be replaced if you go down. Cat 5 races are known to be a bit hectic to say the least. But definitely upgrade from your Trek.
