I agree. I love my sportwagen. Drives great, fits a lot of stuff, good looking, great gas mileage, 4motion is awesome. Power is good but I wish it had a bit more. Maybe APR stage I will wake it up a little bit.

I know,

I bet you there are upwards of a hundred and fifty 2011 - 2012 Jetta's in Chicagoland right now for sale in the $11,000 - $13,000 range with miles ranging from 30k to 75k Plus I can get USAA financing at 5% which seems solid for a car that old.

Is the oil that much more? Like 50% more or what?

My upper end is $15K and rather spend closer to $11K but we will see.

SE is gas right?

I really want a GSW w/ 4motion, but coming from my entire driving experience with Acura/Honda, hows VW reliability? Factory or extended warranty a must?

Good to know. I was browsing other responses and they also mention how reliable they are. Over on the Vortex GSW forum, they don’t paint a pretty picture. Particularly, SEs with pano sun/moon roofs leaking and other issues.

Both of mine are a mk6. No sunroofs and no DSG so both are pretty simple. I do have a 2012 2.0t that supposedly has a questionable timing chain tensioner that I really should get replaced.

I fully expect the 2.0t to cost more than a more normal car but it’s worth it to me. The 2.5 5cyl is a pretty proven and reliable platform.

Might I suggest a burger Motorsports jb4 unit? It's a piggy back with multiple map options including stock map. You can change maps on the fly while driving, so if you have 93oct and an aggressive map 6 (map 6 is user customizable) but decide to go for a road trip and can only find 91 or 87, switch it back to stock through the app and Bam...no worries. You can usually find them for 400 with the Bluetooth kit used. Doesn't void warranty either, doesn't trip the TD1 trigger.

I usually get 35+mpg but I am fwd 5spd. 4mos are known for getting way less. If I keep my foot out of it 40mpg is attainable with the 1.8t

BIG YMMV, my son had a Honda that was anything but reliable..I have had or have numerous VWs and haven't had any that were problematic. I have a 2017 GSW 'S', 4Motion now, 27,000 or so miles..no issues..I got the factory extended warranty for the free service gigs(no longer standard with VW) and because of the electronics.

I also have a 2000 New Beetle..original owner..only hickup was heater motor switch went south, headlights...very reliable..My 2013 TDI JSW, 60,000 miles, also no issues at all(part of the diesel-gate turnin)..

For right above..'S' 4Motion..consistently 28-30 mpg, mixed driving..

I will look into it. I was going to go APR because I have heard nothing but good things. I honestly do like that I can swtich the map and run 87 usually and then go up to 93 when I want to have some fun

Octane?? 2017 JSW 4Motion??

Alright, for you motorheads..I have a 1.8l turbo..4Motion...octane? I use 85 here in CO..mid grade is 87, high test is 91...book says 'mid grade' but I have heard that's balderdash...PLUS midgrade is like $.30 more per gallon(gas around here right now about $2 per)...

I always use 87 in the 2.5 and 91 in the 2.0t

I have heard you can get by with lower octane at higher altitudes. This is supposedly why Colorado stations sell lower octane than elsewhere. We can’t get 85 here.
