How long has it been since NY had the games?

I have a few medals from way back in the day at the games - it was a great experience.

Two years without due to budget cuts. Great memories.

Having seen this thread, I posted a message to the New York State Bicycle Racing Association message board asking if anyone there had more information about cycling at the 2013 ESGs. No news back yet, but I'll be sure to post if I find out any additional information.

I too have lots of good memories from cycling at the ESGs. They were one of the highlights of mid-summer road racing in New York state. Canceling the games was one of the more bone-headed moves done by state government. The state contribution to the games was about $1million in the last years they were held. The economic impact to the host communities was estimated to be $12-15 million. Just based on sales tax revenue alone, the games were self-funding. Unfortunately, the state parks commissioner wanted to gain favor with the governor during the 2008 recession. The Empire State Games were an easy target...

it's odd that there is no cycling, perhaps they are still going to add it. i am optimistic for two reasons, on the home page of the event site, the scrolling images feature cycling, and in the "games" section, there is a blank "button" where cycling should be in alphabetical order. perhaps they are working out the details yet.

Nice. I have a pair of rowing medals from back when I was in high school. The whole thing was a great experience.

Anyone else here do the all-Cats jillion lap qualifier (20? 22? I can't remember) race in Prospect Park? Ridiculously dull but not un-fun, especially in the rain... Since a lot of people were racing over distance (even IIs who didn't race out of town), the attrition rate on "the hill" was amusing to see.

I've got a bunch of swimming medals from the early 90s. A gold in the 50 free that was held outdoors in the rain somewhere north of Albany. Always had a great time there, glad to hear they are back.
