Veteran's Day
Not sure I saw a post about it but just wanted to take a moment to thank all that have served and those that are still serving.

I was active duty w/US Army 1966-69 and am still in contact with several of the guys I served with. Every year at Veteran's Day and some other occasions local organizations and attractions offer special deals for ?active and retired military people and veterans with proper I.D." Well, when I was on active duty and in thr Army Reserve I had an I.D. But I am unaware of any I.d. that is issued to veterans. I have two DD 214 forms. One was issued to me as a Sergeant E-5 in the Regular Army so I could accept a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. After 26 months I got a second DD 214 when I was discharged as a First LT. to show complete records of my time of service but they are 8 1/2 x 11" sheets of paper that nobody I know carries as an I.D. Any vets in our group know more about i.d.s than I do?

My state DMV has a Veteran option drivers license. No cost. You do need to be registered with your states VA. It’s a nice perk.
Thanks to all who signed on the line- Semper Fi |

yes - you are correct in providing above link - my veterans status does shows up on my drivers license. The link - https://www.va.gov/records/get-veteran-id-cards/vic/ only allows a digital version yet you have to submit a photo - ugh! However you can print a paper version on your own - mine did nto come out looking very professional - states "choose VA" - has my picture and states "this card serves as proof of service.... I didn’t serve but I’m very proud of my grandad who fought with the ANZAC forces in the pacific during World War Two
He went and fought and came home, he was one of the lucky ones |

Today is a day I think of the veterans in the previous generations, and my own, particularly in the family. Democracy runs on volunteers, people who step up to serve their communities, states, and nation. Putting your life in harm's way to do that is a massive gesture of patriotism. I doff my cap to all of those who have done so.
Veterans Day started out as Armistice Day, marking the end of WW1. The signers of that document had an eye on having history remember it. They signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. No one has taken it to Eleven any better, not even Spinal Tap. One outcome for most if not all of the combatants of WW1 has been a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Ours here in the US is at Arlington. Britain's is at Westminster, I think, and France's is at the Arc de Triomphe. The TOTUS at Arlington was dedicated on this day in 1921. Here's a picture from that day: The guy on the right, in front of the four soldiers, holding his top hat and looking at the Chief (who is looking back at him), was my great grandfather. He was the Secretary of War, charged with putting the whole memorial and event together. He was an Annapolis grad, had served (Spanish American War! ) and had been in Congress and the Senate as well. His son, my grandfather, survived WW1. I hope it's OK to have thrown a little history into this discussion. We can learn from our pasts. |

I'm approaching the number of years since retirement that I spent in the Army, 26 years+. Next year, I'll reach that milestone. Regular Army, 1973-1999, Colonel.
