Open Upper Conce.pt

Something new from Open Cycle:
https://opencycle.com/blog/u.p.per.-conce.pt

It appears to be an updated UPPER with aero headtube/seatcluster, UDH, T47, more tire clearance, and made in Portugal. Limited run of M and L sizes.

More generally, Open is revisiting, updating, iterating, etc their frames.

I'll start. I like what Open does. The Wi.De is my favorite bike - versatile, dynamic, comfortable, fun bike. An update to their bikes is overdue. My thoughts on the preliminary specs:

the good: T47, UDH, more tire clearance

the bad: aero, full internal cable, not fenderable

Open

I didn't see anything about tire clearance or geometry?

The press-in BB was one of my main sticking points when looking at a Wide. I finally relented when a few friends w/ Opens said their BBs had been flawless and a Wide came up at a price I couldn't turn down. I also remember reading a post from Open about the benefits of press-in so I'd love to hear the reason for the change.

I could do w/o in-frame storage if that means a lighter frame. The Lauf founders were interviewed on a recent Escape Collective podcast episode and mentioned how putting a big a hole in a carbon frame and thus breaking up the run of fibers required lots of reinforcement to build the strength backup.

The Conce.pt above is probably becasue it's made in Portugal. He talked about moving manufacturing to Portugal on a recent podcast.

As for all the other models... maybe search engine optimization? U.P.(P.E.R.) will come up easily if typed al crazy like that. However, I typed open upper bike in google and it still came up quickly.

So, I have no idea. Maybe they just want it to look like an Aphex Twin song title?

Upper is my fav bike but would love to try a Wide one day.

Fenders- I gave up full coverage fenders (for my area). I’ve got a set of SKS Speedrockers for the Upper. I’d imagine they’d fit the new version as well.

Love the update, minus the internal cables.

I like how it looks. Curious what they do with geometry as the current opens seem a little outdated on that front

How exciting. I have the UP purchased when one came up for cheap. (Its supposed to be the same frame flex characteristics as UPPER but of course Jan Heine says he can tell the difference) I absolutely love this thing. Its become my main road bike with 700 35 and I just put wider tires 700 44 for gravel which has been fine for the gravel I do. Can always go with 650b for wider too. It has mostly replaced both road and gravel bikes. This looks like a cool update. I love the full internal and consider this a minimalist bike- no fenders. I could lose the front derailleur mount too.

...or those bars have almost 0 reach to them?

Can't totally tell what is happening.

What about 650b?
I don’t see that mentioned.

i really like my U.P. I've been on it for 6 years and am overdue due for a refresh. I've been hanging on the news of the new/improved version. Imo they are great allround bikes.
Concept u.a.l.l.y
this new bike is on point with all the features (except 2x) but aesthetics leave a lot to be desired. I guess I was expecting something more Aspero-like, instead the head tube seems straight off a Racemax. That barstem looks broken. Maybe irl it looks better, rides better but to be honest I'm kind of disappointed.
