Serotta with no serial number(?)

I bought my first Serotta and am fairly certain it is an Atlanta. After seeing the serial numbers decoded on this forum, I look under the bottom bracket. No serial numbers are visible. Please share your thoughts on how or why I would not see them there.

Bike rides like a dream btw.

Post a picture and the experts here will chime in. Could be stolen and the numbers were filed off. If the paint is real thick from a repaint they could possibly be covered.

That is an unfomrtanate possibility. I may not be the best judge of character, but the seller seemed very respectable.

It doesn't appear as though there is an "Atlanta" decal on the top tube, actually no decal that I can see. The down tube and seat tube appear to be tapered, how about the top tube? What does it say on the fork? I think most if not all the Atlantas had steel forks although I think for awhile you could order them as a custom. The decals appear to be correct. Are there file marks or signs of a repaint on the bottom of the BB?

Thanks for the response.
Top tube is not tapered.
Down tube and seat tube are tapered.
Fork is Reynolds ouzo pro, 1 1/8".
No signs of filing, possible repaint, but I can't be sure.

1 1/8 fork? I think all Atlantas were 1". That would make your bike a later model. I asked about the top tube taper to make sure it wasn't a CSi, Atlantas did not have a tapered top tube. The Ouzo Pro is after market, good fork though.
Lean that rig up against your garage door and take a pic straight on from the drive side. Crop it as close as you can.

I will confirm the 1 1/8" fork. Sadly, I can not ride it or take a new picture of it until this weekend. Tx again.

If it is a Serotta, I'm gonna say it's been repainted; unusual placement of the chainstay decals, Serotta placed them further back, more or less midway between the rear dropouts and seat tube/bottom bracket join. It doesn't appear to have the usual tubing decal on the seat tube up near the top tube and I can't see any decals on the lower portion of the seat tube, down near the bottom bracket join.

The seat tube cluster does look like the kind used on the Atlanta.

Hmmm. No additional decals or model name on the seat or top tubes beyond the 'Serotta'. It does have The 'S' stamped on the seat tube cluster.

You are probably right. I'm going to back off the 1 1/8" statement until I have a chance to measure.

Not a whole lot you can do about the past now, regardless of what might or might not have happened.

If it fits you properly ride the bike and enjoy it.

It seems a bit tainted the moment but that could pass during my next ride.

Not 'tainted' at all, it is a Serotta evidenced by the S on the seat tube cluster. It's merely a repaint to suit a previous owners taste. I've had several Serottas repainted.
