Just read through the VeloNews 2021 Gear Guide that came in the mail today. Didn't take long. Every single bike they featured in the issue had disc brakes. And every single bike I own has caliper brakes. You'd think I'd be their ideal target audience.

Except it doesn't work that way. It just feels like the bike industry has moved on and left me behind. Oh well, that's OK. I really like my bikes.

The 2021 gear guide is about new bikes, new bikes have disc brakes, why are you even looking at this if you’re triggered by new bikes? What do you expect them to do, show old bikes? What a crazy thread.

I love my current bikes too. 06 Meivici, 09 Compact, and a 02 Rigormootis. All with 10 speed no less. In fact on my Moots I sold my 6800 group to put on a 7900 group with absolutely no regrets. And my mtb is a 26er! But when I go to group rides now I am pretty intrigued by the new bikes with discs, etc. I'd love to try one. And I'd love to pick up a new 29er. But I can't get myself to sell any bike I have, I love them that much. Discs are here to stay. Ride what you got and be happy with that.

Well, for some strange reason, I've subscribed to VN for over 30 years. So I guess I still look at what comes in my mail. If that's crazy to you, so be it.

It's really not about the readers of this or any publication. It is about what the advertisers want. They drive the content more than readership. I get Road Bike Action and every issue has a "riders we see". 80% of the riders featured have rim brakes yet the editors constantly write that rim brakes are terrible to ride. The advertisers dollars speak, not the audience.
