Paint, paint alternatives (PHX AZ)

Steve Garro from Coconino Cycles is building a new fork for my Indy Fab, but his paint person retired...so I'm getting a bare fork and need to find a painter. I struck out with my first choice, a local Harley painter, because the job was too small. Any leads in the Tempe/PHX area? I really don't want to send it out and wait two months... I'm actually thinking of buying a gun and doing it myself.

Spraybike looks good for a fork. My most recent Coconino (2019) went to Dark Matter Finishing. I think they work in batches so either it's a short or long turnaround, depending on the timing.

I may use them in the future. I am hoping to have Steve build me an old school CX bike that will run 40s in the wet.

I have Spraybiked a frame. It's good if you don't really care about it. As in, "oh there are some bare spots from rub, I'll just sand and spray a quick touch up". Do not expect it to be a permanent / quality finish.

I have a powder coater I use:
R&L powder coating in San Fernando. Jay is great. Not your area but a good coater and a good price.

If you want to paint it yourself:

• 2k primer or etching primer
• base coat
• let base cure/outgas for a week.
• SprayMax 2k clear in a can. (3 coats)
• Cut with 1000 and then 1500 grit sandpaper
• Buff with Griot's Complete Compound.

It's not rocket science. I'd suggest you got find a Sherwin Williams Auto Paint seller, and have them package a color and a clear coat spray can for you. They mix and fill the cans on site. It works well, and modern coatings have little VOC's so the fumes aren't awful.

Or...if you have a friend with an HVLP spray rig, you could have some real fun...

the Harley guy prob said no because it was small, but close to his existing type of work. check out a local auto body shop and talk to the painter there. Odds are, they do some side work already for cash since their regular work is larger scale. this is what my brother did for years, always had a few cash-side-jobs going, usually motorcycle gas tanks, bicycle frames, etc.

My Coconino Dirt Road Racer clears a 40 in the rear with a double crank set. It has a unicrown fork so it will clear 2.3" if the mood hit me.

He has some NOS Max tubesets.

Here it is. Steve made it in 2017. He had just finished his wife's MTB and I liked the color (signal blue). Steve built wheels for it as well and they had a good life until this summer when I noticed a bunch of cracks around the eyelets. Old Potatoe used my old hubs (WI XMR) and some Boyd CCC rims I had dropped shipped to him to build the current wheel set. The old wheels had WTB I-23 rims but the CCC rims are 25mm ID and profile the tire better. The current tires are 38mm Gravel Kings.
