Vtg Speedplay - Maintenance

I still ride Speedplay X pedals.

I find every 4 - 6 wks, they squeak Re contact with the cleats. I usually spray the pedals with Teflon and wipe a little on the cleat.

Given the above, I was curious if anyone else "greased" their pedals, generally, and especially Speedplay, and if yes, if you used another type of grease / lube.

Thanks!

I occasionally put a little Burt's Bees Wax on the bow ties of my Zero's. I've never had a squeaking problem though.

Anything tacky like grease is going to be a dirt/dust/grime magnet and cause you grief down low on the bike.

Way back in the day when i rode speedplay pedals, i gave them a shot of aerosol dry lube every couple rides and it kept everything quiet without attracting dirt.

I put a drop of white lightning dry lube where the spring and metal bottom plate meet every so often. I regrease the bearings inside the pedal, but spraying it with Teflon is not needed. It's just the cleat that they recommend putting dry lube on.

I've never had a squeaking problem. Are your springs or metal plates worn? They could be worn a little and make some noise due to that.

As per the instructions that came with my Speedplays, I've always used a chain lube that contains Teflon, like Finish Line Dry

...which apparently no longer contains Teflon?!?!

Before every ride (for the last 20+ years), I've sprayed this stuff on my cleats prior to every ride. No squeaks, no buildup, easily cleans up. And it works wonders for cleaning grease off, too.

Thanks all for the replies. I have some old silca chain lube and will be giving that a try, but it's good to know if it doesn't work I have other options to try.

Are you springs flat from wear? Are your bow ties worn? These are the two most area prone to wear.

I’m off speed plays now but I rode them for years and my procedure was the same. Before every decent ride (at least weekly) I would spray the inside of my cleats with a dry lube like this. Worked well. I think this was in the official FAQ at the time.

As an aside, if you DO spray the cleat with some sort of lube, be careful, they can get slippery as you walk toward your bike..Ask me and my MCL how I know..
